About the File Formats
The Franke Dictyostelium Reference Library is currently available in two
different formats, in deference to the different reference management
systems available for personal computers. Both formats contain exactly
the same information. We acknowledge that there are an increasing number
of bibliographic management systems for personal computers, and we are
investigating moving to a generic interchange file format in the future.
EndNote
EndNote (currently at version X1)
is a very popular bibiographic manager published by Thomson Researchsoft.
It is available for 32-bit Windows and Macintosh platforms, files created
on one platform can be shared with others without modification. Important
Note: EndNote stores its files are in a proprietary format, and during
the upgrade to version 8, a format change happened. While Endnote 8 and
above can open and import files created in version 7 and below, the converse
is not true. We have upgraded to EndNote version 9.
Version X1 resulted in another file format change, but we are not distributing
files in that format yet.
Refer/BibIX
Refer/BibIX is the format used by BibIX, a database management system
used under UNIX, written by
Dr. RPC Rodgers and Dr. Conrad
Huang of UC Laurel Heights. It is a tagged ASCII file that can
be imported into a variety of bibliographic database systems, including
EndNote. Technical information on BibIX and its format can be obtained
from the authors: (415)476-2957.
Compression
We have standardized compression using the .ZIP scheme. Most computer
platforms and browsers now recognize and decompress .ZIP files without
any further intervention from the user. For Macintosh and
Windows systems, we recommend the free program
Stuffit Expander.
